REVIEW by Chris Hankin of JUST FLUTES
"Karen North is now a familiar name in the world of flute education and this book is another of her great publications. Pitched at a higher level than her other books, she has commissioned all fifteen duets and what a varied collection of interesting pieces they are. Starting with Inner Dialogue by Elena Kats-Chernin, an upbeat number which includes tremolando, they cover a broad spectrum of musical styles and become increasingly more difficult as the book progresses. There is an imaginative use of extended techniques by many of the composers with flutter tonguing, keys slaps and voice call outs all used to great musical effect. Varying time signatures also add plenty of character. John Shephard's Standing Room is a particular highlight with its driving rhythms, note bends and a 10/16 central section which is really quirky! This is a great buy for anyone who likes something just that bit different and would make an ideal companion to any other more standard volume of duets."
