FLUTE TEACHER CONVERSATIONS
A workshop/discussion group for all flute teachers

Introducing Flute Teacher Conversations!
I’m delighted to be restarting my online sessions for flute teachers - this time with a new format and open to flute teachers at every stage of their teaching journey.
Each Flute Teacher Conversation will focus on a particular teaching topic. I’ll begin with a practical presentation, sharing ideas, strategies and approaches from my own teaching experience. We’ll then open the discussion so that teachers can share experiences, brainstorm solutions and learn from one another.
There will also be an Ask Me Anything section. You’ll be able to submit questions beforehand - perhaps about a student you’re struggling to help, a technical problem, repertoire, lesson planning, motivation, beginner teaching or one of those situations where you find yourself wondering, What else can I do?
These sessions are designed to offer both practical professional learning and genuine conversation with other flute teachers.
New teachers and experienced teachers are equally welcome. Come with questions and ideas, or simply come along to listen and take some new inspiration back to your studio.

PRESENTER: Karen North
Karen North is a flute teacher, educator, and book author with over 40 years of experience in music education. Passionate about bringing music into the lives of children and adults, Karen’s teaching has been described as creative and dynamic. She was Director of Music at Sydney Grammar (Edgecliff) School and has also taught in government schools at both primary and high school level.
Karen is the author of the popular and enduring flute method The Young Flute Player (translated into six languages), and has arranged many ensemble works, including Festive Flute Fun. Motivated to expand the repertoire with contemporary works and support living composers, she began commissioning new music in 2020. This led to Lyrical Flute Legends, a collection of 20 pieces including original works for intermediate-level flute and piano.
Since then, Karen has commissioned over 100 works from living composers, published in award winning collections that have been enthusiastically embraced worldwide: Inspiring Flute Duets (two flutes), Inspiring Flute Solos (unaccompanied flute), Lyrical Flute Encores, and Lyrical Flute Miniatures (both flute & piano).
To promote performance opportunities for students and adult amateur players worldwide, Karen has organised an annual international flute competition since 2021, with esteemed judges including Sir James and Lady Galway, Lorna McGhee, Ulla Miilmann, Viviana Guzmán, Adam Eccleston, Sonia Croucher, Joshua Batty, and Dr. Brice Smith.
Karen also supports teachers through online workshops, mentoring for new teachers, and presentations at conferences in Australia and internationally. Her blog and free newsletter offer practical teaching resources and advice.
