Karen North M. Mus., B.A. (Hons.), Dip. Ed. (Music) is an Australian flute teacher, publisher, and author with over 40 years of experience in music education. Passionate about bringing music into the lives of children and adults, she has dedicated her career to creating inspiring educational resources, supporting instrumental teachers, and expanding contemporary repertoire for developing musicians.
Karen is the founder of Allegro Music Publishing, an international music publishing company known for high-quality educational repertoire, music games, and contemporary works for flute and other instruments. Since the publication of her first book, The Young Flute Player, Allegro Music Publishing has grown into a widely recognised resource for teachers, students, and performers around the world.
As an educator, Karen is known for her creative and engaging teaching approach, with a strong belief that students learn best when music-making is enjoyable, imaginative, and musically rewarding. Her publications reflect this philosophy, combining strong pedagogical foundations with artistic and expressive repertoire.
Karen is the author of the acclaimed flute method series The Young Flute Player, which has been used successfully by teachers and students for decades and translated into multiple languages. She has also written music education resource books including Fun & Games for Music Lessons, helping teachers bring creativity and engagement into their lessons.
A passionate advocate for living composers and contemporary repertoire, Karen has commissioned over 100 new works for flute students and performers. These collaborations with internationally recognised composers have resulted in collections including Lyrical Flute Legends, Lyrical Flute Encores, Inspiring Flute Solos, Inspiring Flute Duets, and Lyrical Flute Miniatures. Through these projects, Karen aims to provide repertoire that is both educationally valuable and artistically inspiring.
Karen is also committed to supporting instrumental teachers worldwide through workshops, mentor programs, pedagogical articles, free educational resources, and a widely read newsletter and blog. Her presentations for teachers have been enthusiastically received both within Australia and internationally.
Since 2021, Karen has organised the Lyrical Flute International Championship, an annual online competition welcoming flute players of all ages and levels from around the world. The championship features internationally respected judges including Sir James Galway, Lady Jeanne Galway, Viviana Guzmán, and other leading performers and educators.
